Information Technology and Telecommunications for the New Generation of Brazilian Biofuels

QUESTERA has a consulting practice and an active history of service to energy companies and, in particular, to the oil&gas sector. recently, a new generation of biofuels emerged, based on celulosic ethanol obtained from residues from conventional plants of sugar cane ethanol production. The reutilization of such residues can offer up to 35% increase in ethanol production, and present clear advantagens from the environmental conservation perspective.

The new plants will represent new opportunities and challenges of management, automation and logistics, to which IT and telecommunications solutions and tools will have to be developed or adapted.

In the Northeast of Brazil, the first plants in commercial scale with this new technology are appearing. One of these pioneer plants, built with investments of approximately 150 million U.S. dollars, will produce about 82 million litters of ethanol anually. An additional expected step, based on ongoing genetic engineering research, is the development of sugar cane varieties richer in cellulose, which will allow the increase in production efficiency and satisfy the increasing demand for ethanol from the Brazilian vehicles.

QUESTERA is active in the relationships between IT and Telecommunications projects and R&D and innovation initiatives of other sectors, and has been working to build and implement the Scientific and Technological Intelligence Center (CCTIC) of ASSESPRO, the Brazilian Association of Software and IT Service Companies.
